The vibrant spirit of Pongal came alive in the Kindergarten classrooms on 14th January 2026, as our youngest learners traded their pencils for paintbrushes. In a beautiful blend of cultural heritage and artistic exploration, the students participated in a DIY Pot Painting activity that turned simple materials into festive masterpieces.
This hands-on activity was designed to introduce students to cultural awareness while encouraging creativity and self-expression through art. By decorating their own pots, the students developed essential fine motor skills, focus, and imagination, ultimately fostering a sense of confidence and pride in their work. The event promoted a deep respect for cultural traditions, gratitude, and inclusivity, creating a joyful learning environment that celebrated the essence of the harvest festival.
The creative process was uniquely designed to be both fun and sustainable. Using recycled tissue rolls as the primary material, the students painted and decorated them with vibrant colors to transform them into miniature pots. Once a base was attached to the bottom to allow the rolls to stand upright, students placed soft cotton balls on top to represent the overflowing Pongal rice. Teachers guided the students through each step, ensuring a supportive experience that balanced instruction with individual creativity.
This activity resonated deeply with several GIIS key educational frameworks. It successfully integrated the 9Gems holistic model, specifically focusing on Gem 3 for Visual and Performing Arts, Gem 5 for Innovation and Creativity, Gem 4 for Personality Development, and Gem 9 for Skill Development. Furthermore, it aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, supporting SDG 4 for Quality Education and SDG 11 for Sustainable Communities. Through this simple yet impactful exercise, our Kindergarten students didn't just make art; they connected with the world around them in a meaningful and colorful way.
